How to find a good Mediator
Finding your perfect Mediator is much the same as finding a therapist.
1. Make a short list of about four or five Mediators in and around your area that seem promising. Inquire about a free initial consultation.
2. During your first visit arm yourselves with a series of questions for each mediator. What is her interview style? What fees are involved? What is her experience in this process and more specifically in Divorces?
3. Ultimately, listen to your gut. Do you feel comfortable with the mediator? Do you trust him or her? If not, honor your feelings. Divorce is hard enough without adding another factor that causes unease.
You may be confused as to
what to expect
from the whole process. This mostly depends on what type of mediation style you have chosen. There are two basic types of mediators:
• One who Directs - The mediator who directs, listens to both you and your spouse and gives direct instructions as to how you should proceed.
• One who Facilitates - The mediator who facilitates acts a sounding board through your divorce. She does not make decisions—she helps both you and your spouse to come up with the most equitable terms possible.
Although there are some cases where you should check for the
suitability of Divorce Mediation,
the overall end goal of all types of Mediation is to help you both in jointly reaching your outcome - a Happy Divorce.
