The Effects of Divorce on Elementary School age Children
The effects of Divorce on children at Elementary / Junior School (5-11 years) can often run very deeply and lead to a deep seated suffering that they find incredibly hard to express effectively.
Children of this age regularly blame themselves for the breakup and may have an overwhelming fear of being displaced by a new step-mother/father or new siblings. This manifests itself in the child who often becomes excessively compliant and submissive or overtly aggressive and confrontational / attention seeking.
Common Events in your Child's Behaviour:
- Their angst may show up in Headaches , Stomach pains, worsening of Asthma
- Continued hopes and dreams for
parents' reconciliation
- Intense anger with either one or both parent for allowing the divorce to happen
- Problems at School - either poor performance due to worry/being distracted or attention seeking to draw parents together for meetings at schools. Some children do better at school as they shut out events at home and focus on work as an 'escape'.
- Taking on of the 'missing' adult role - for example your son may try to become 'The Man of the House' if the father leaves or girls may try to 'mother' younger siblings in the absence of a woman in the home.
